Interview with Alex Jones

We've had the pleasure of working with S4C presenter Alex Jones (presenter of the S4C show 'Tipit') on a number of George Thomas Hospice charity events, and have always been struck not only by her evident beauty, but also her tremendous sense of style, coupled with a wonderfully friendly and open manner.

Alex very kindly spared us some of her precious time for an interview with Cymru Culture.

CC ... Being a TV presenter means that a considerable emphasis is placed on how you look. How would you describe your personal sense of style?

AJ ... That's a hard one. Some days, I'm a jeans and T shirt kind of girl, and on other days I like to dress up a bit more.  It really depends on how much time I've got in the morning to be honest, and how many times I've pressed snooze!  I like anything with a bit of colour ... I tend to avoid black if I can possibly help it!  When I'm working, I tend to go for dresses, I find them that much easier than trousers or skirts, because you only have to think about accessories with a dress.

CC ... Do you have a favourite fashion designer?

AJ ... My favourite designer is probably Julien MacDonald. He does old school glamour really well.  I saw one of his shows once at London fashion week, and the dresses were to die for!

CC ... Do you have a favourite shop or boutique in Wales?

AJ ... My favourite high street shop is definitely Topshop, but especially the Cardiff branch, because the style advisors have been absolutely brilliant over the last couple of years. I would highly recommend them!  For something a bit different, I'm a big fan of Poppers in Pontcanna and Seren in Morgan Arcade, Cardiff.

CC ... Which celebrity's sense of style do you most admire?

AJ ... I think that the actress Kate Beckinsale always looks good.

CC ... What is your signature perfume and what makes it your favourite?

AJ ... My signature scent is Pomegranate Noir by Jo Malone.  Jo malone are great because you can mix and match different fragrances to create one that's personal to you. This particular one is also great because it's fresh enough for day, but also heavy enough to get away with it at night.

CC ... What is your favourite restaurant in Wales?

AJ ... I would have to say Mimosa in Cardiff Bay.  The tuna is always very tasty.  I also like walking over the barrage to Custom House in Penarth, it's very reasonable and the walk ensures that you can have pudding!

CC ... If you could invite any five guests to a dinner party, who would they be and why?

AJ ... My friends would be my first choice because they would forgive my terrible cooking. But if they weren't available then I might go for Ant and Dec, Paul O'Grady, Dawn French (as the Vicar of Dibley) and Chase Crawford from the TV series Gossip Girl (very handsome).

CC ... Most people have a signature dish that they prepare at home. What would be your signature dish if you were preparing a meal for friends?

AJ ... I honestly don't have one, unless beans on toast counts.  I'm getting better, but a signature dish is a long way off. I would probably have to pass some take away menus around!

CC ... Where is your favourite place in the world and is there anywhere you would like to travel to in future?

AJ ... That's difficult.  I think my favourite view was from a little restaurant that we found one summer, overlooking the whole of Sorrento, Italy. That was beautiful.  Apart from that, I would have to say New York.  I really love it, and hate leaving every time!  In future, I would like to travel to India.  Lots of people have been there recently and have said how lovely it is.

CC ... Which book have you read most recently and what did you think of it?'

AJ ... Currently, I'm half way through a book called The Luminous Life of Lilly Aphrodite ... I've stuck with it, and I'm glad I did, it's getting much better now.  Before that, I read The Other Boleyn Girl, by Phillipa Gregory.  That's a fantastic read!

CC ... Alex Jones, thank you.
