Stylish present wrapping ideas

Wrapping 2017 6

I have always believed that as much effort should go into wrapping gifts as deciding upon what to give someone; it seems to make the gift more complete and personal. This is not to suggest that wrapping gifts should require any particular expertise or considerable expense, but just that the outside of the gift is just as much a gift as what is inside.

Opting for a particular theme or colourway can give even the smallest of gifts real impact - especially when showcased under the Christmas tree with other co-ordinated decorated gifts - and you can use all sorts of products to achieve a really stylish, individual look.

Scandi-chic is especially popular this year, characterized by wooden Christmas motifs in a rustic and unfinished style, red and white stitched ribbons, rustic ornaments decorated with bark and hung with rough twine and painted enamel and tin decorations (typically stars and hearts), in a naïve handmade style.

Glamour never goes out of fashion, with lots of presents being seen decorated with jewelled-toned Christmas baubles and richly coloured satin ribbons, which clash beautifully with embossed and heavily decorated wrapping papers (Paperchase are particularly good in this regard).

I have used some glittered pine cones and mirrored 'disco ball' baubles this year (see below), and I hope you agree that they give a really fun addition to what would have been a rather boring glittered gift box.

Also featuring heavily in the shops this season are glittered and embellished items, whether it be gift boxes, ribbons or baubles. For one of my gifts I have used gold glittered angel wings (which came in a pack of two from Poundland), and it gives a really dramatic effect.

Humour is also featuring prominently this year, with kitsch characters and themes featuring heavily in the high street, anything from lamas to dinosaurs can be seen this year – my personal favourites being jewelled flamingos.

So, here are some of my wrapping ideas for 2017, which I hope you will agree look stylish and are inexpensive to achieve (links when available follow each example).

One of the secrets of stylish wrapping is wired ribbon, as this enables you to manipulate the ribbon into the shape and style you want, and is something I use to give real dramatic effect.

This year I have used wired ribbons from Poundworld, Poundstretcher, The Works and Flying Tiger Copenhagen, as I found these to be the most reasonable. If you want really special and luxurious ribbon (sometimes in excess of £5.00 per metre) then a huge array of colours and styles can be found on eBay. My particular favourites this year are the jute ribbons from Poundworld and the woven ribbons from Poundstretcher.

The baubles I have used come from Poundstretcher and Poundland.

Woven cream ribbon with cream snowflake design

Wrapping 2017 1

For this gift I decided on a muted look.

I used this lovely cream woven ribbon which is decrated with red glitter Christmas themes (available from Poundstretcher at £1.00 for two metres), and a snowflake Christmas decoration (the decoration is described as 'white' on the website but appeared cream to me whilst in the shop).

The decoration from Poundstrecher was just 79p!

Silver mirror paper as before.

Glitter gift-box and mirror ball design

The grey glitter gift box was from Flying Tiger Copenhagen (Cardiff and Carmarthen – glitter boxes start from £2.00 each and come in a selection of colours and sizes – available in store only), and the pink glittered wired ribbon was from The Works.

The mirror ball decoration was bought from Poundstretcher some years ago (in a pack of three), but similar designs are avaolable on eBay.

Amazon have a set of 12 miniature disco baubles for £5.99, which is great value for money per bauble.

Silver bells design

The mirrored gift box was a little boring on it's own, so I decorated it. Lengths of garden twine wrapped around the box a number of times created a scandi-look, then I used pink coloured glittered (wired) ribbon and attached a small silver bell to the gift.

The silver bells came in a pack of 10 from Poundland, so represent excellent value.

Jute ribbon and wooden snowflake design

Stylish Christmas wrapping

This gift is wrapped in the silver mirrored gift wrap I have used throughout, but is decorated with a jute silver spotted (wired ribbon) and a wooden snowflake decoration.

It creates a stylish and very scandi-chic decorated gift.

The jute wired ribbon is from Poundworld (it comes in 2.7 metre lengths for £1.00) and the wooden snowflake (which comes as a pack of two with a Christmas tree) is £1.00 from Poundland.

Other ideas

The above are ideas I have come up with, but you can really use almost anything to decorate gifts.

I came across these scandi-chic wooden decorations from Poundworld, which would make lovely additions, and there is a huge amount to chose from.

Have fun wrapping!
