Walking on Fleetwood Lane

Walking on Fleetwood Lane this morning,
the sun low ahead dazzling mine eyes,
when all the host of people
walking in the opposite direction
seeking shops of various kinds
became as shadows or ghosts,
each one drifting by
seeming to greet me in a pleasant manner
and I was distracted from reality
as if a man in a dream
or indeed walking to heaven

This following the recent showering
of bright sparks in mine eyes and mind
and the flickering visions of still repose
that laid me low in spirit for many days
has convinced me that ought is real
or as it seems
but all is as vapour
and this world but a chimera.

I saw also a host of angels
sat on the branches of several trees
in the great park
and wondered at their business.

Boyd Clack,
after William Blake, Seventh day of February, 1789
