Oriel Colwyn - Street Life

Oriel Colwyn, north Wales' newest gallery space, opened on 26 April 2012. It is housed within the historic Theatr Colwyn building, Colwyn Bay. The theatre, built in 1885, has the honour of being both the oldest operating theatre and cinema in Wales. It plays perfect host to the gallery space.

Oriel Colwyn opens with its inaugural exhibition, which runs to the end of July. The exhibition, called Street Life, is an exciting new interactive art exhibition, which aims to celebrate life in the Colwyn Bay area - past and present. By collaborating with the local community, it is producing a unique visionary piece of participatory art.

Visitors, and contributors, to Oriel Colwyn's Street Life exhibition

Paul Sampson, the exhibition curator, has covered the gallery walls with a large-scale street map of the area. Paul says "residents and visitors from Colwyn Bay and the surrounding areas are invited to come to the gallery over the next three months and pin a favourite photograph to this map. The photograph can be a captured moment or a favourite place in the area. It can be from recent times, or further back in the past."

Paul is the photographic artist who recently followed Phase One of the theatre’s regeneration programme. He is currently exhibiting the photographic result at Venue Cymru, Llandudno.

For the past three months, the gallery has been working to create an innovative first exhibition that encourages the community, along with local schools and the education sector, to visit and interact with the arts.

Running alongside the exhibition is a dedicated website and blog at www.orielcolwyn.org, and a Twitter feed @orielcolwyn, both of which add a new level of interaction and engage with the younger residents of the area. Oriel Colwyn also hold a complimentary series of workshops and activities on oral history, heritage and photography.

By working closely with various sectors within the community, Oriel Colwyn has managed to largely self fund this first exhibition, with little or minimal cost to the theatre. The support they have received to date highlights the area's excitement and enthusiasm about the gallery, and its need for this space.

Oriel Colwyn - Terry Jones at Street Life

The comedian, actor and director, Terry Jones, of Monty Python fame, and patron of Theatr Colwyn, has already submitted his photograph. The image shows him playing on the beach at Colwyn Bay in 1944, aged 2½, wooden spoon in hand!

Please do drop by, if you are in the area, and add your image to this unique project.
