Review: The Old Chemist Inn, Saundersfoot

(September 01, 2013)

The Old Chemist Inn, Saundersfoot

Saundersfoot is a delightful little seaside town on the Pembrokeshire coast. Although generally outdone by the better known town of Tenby nearby, Saundersfoot enjoys its own charm and is certainly worth a visit. We recently stopped there, after a disappointing experience at the St Brides Hotel & Spa (which we cancelled hence our visit to the 'Old Chemist Inn' for lunch) and was so delighted with the quality of the food that we wanted to share it with our readers.

The town is spread over a number of small hills on which the prettily pastel-painted houses and buildings are scattered, with a picturesque little harbour at its centre. It has a number of small and independent shops which are lovely to wander around, together with a number of retailers aiming for the tourist market showcasing (or rather spilling) their ubiquitous buckets and spades outside their shop fronts.

The Old Chemist Inn is along The Strand; the main street to the left of the harbour if you are standing and looking out to sea.

We made our way out into the beer garden, accessed by walking through the Inn and down some steps, which looks out on to the beach. The beer garden is delightful, wonderfully distressed and weather-beaten. A smattering of pretty flowers and plants are dotted about, with a few steps leading directy down onto Saundersfoot's beautiful beach of clean, golden sand. It is really charming and especially nice on a sunny afternoon, which we were enjoying.

We ordered from the specials board, sea bass with new potatoes. The sea bass arrived promptly and pipping hot. It was served whole, with spinach, on the vine tomatoes and chives for decoration in some melted butter. The sea bass was very large, which certainly made it excellent value for money for approximately £15, and excellently seasoned.
