Review: The Bunch of Grapes, Pontypridd

Cymru Culture have reviewed the Bunch of Grapes, Pontypridd, in a previous edition but, having enjoyed another excellent meal there, we decided to review them again and share our experiences of their wonderful food and great customer service.

Bunch of Grapes 1a Bunch of Grapes' menu

The once thriving market-town of Pontypridd, now has its own foodie delight; The Bunch of Grapes. It serves, what I would term, 'gastro pub grub' (which is not meant in a derogatory sense), serving dishes and recipes that are well known to most. Typically being made on the premises, their emphasis is on quality and on local, seasonal produce.

We chose a very pleasant table on the terrace, in the sunshine, bringing our drinks with us from the bar. My partner had aubergine in breadcrumbs to start. I had sardines on a mixed salad, dressed with a balsamic glaze. Both were delicious and generously portioned. For mains, I chose the same as I had the last time we ate here (hard to beat a winning formula), which was gammon, duck egg and chips. My partner had the mackerel. Again, both were wonderfully cooked and generously (and quickly) served.

Service is attentive and re-fills quickly processed, which is typical of the service we receive every time we visit here, attentive but not obtrusive.

They have a considerable number of specials chalked up on the blackboards dotted around the restaurant, so you can be rather spoilt for choice. We also overheard the waiting staff describing some of the deserts to other diners, and they sounded delicious. Sadly, having had two courses, we were too full for a third.

All coming in under £60.00 (including drinks), this restaurant/gastropub, however you wish to refer to it, represents excellent value for money and comes highly recommended.

Scores on the doors: pleased to see The Bunch of Grapes' Food Standards Agency hygiene rating is 5/5 - very good (last inspected 4 September 2012).
