Cardiff before Cardiff; Jon Pountney

(April 05, 2012)

Cardiff before Cardiff

Cardiff before Cardiff is a free exhibition of around 100 photographs. Images taken by Cardiff photographer Keith S. Robertson during the 1970s and early 1980s are displayed alongside recent photographs taken by Jon Pountney.

The exhibition runs between 5 April and 27 April 2012 at the Wales Millennium Centre, Cardiff (level 1 & 2)

Cardiff Before Cardiff

Cardiff-based freelance photographer Jon Pountney discovered more than a thousand photography negatives and three hundred prints while renovating Warwick Hall in Gabalfa, Cardiff in late 2010. The images had been taken by Cardiff photographer Keith S. Robertson during the late 1970s and early 1980s; predominantly depicting day-to-day life in the Splott, Butetown and Adamsdown areas of the city. Pountney set about finding out what became of Robertson and of the subjects of his incredible photographs.

Although only 30 years old, the scenes in Robertson’s photographs show a world vastly different to the Cardiff of today.

The exhibition is a fascinating combination of social history, a mystery story, social media, and classic documentary narrative in some amazing imagery.
